The SJA Story

1884 The first Dominican Sisters arrive in Adrian, Michigan

1896 Mother Camilla Madden founds St. Joseph Academy as an all-girls boarding school (in building that is now Madden Hall)

1919 Mother Camilla Madden founds St. Joseph College (later Siena Heights University) at the same location as St. Joseph Academy

1922 Sacred Heart Hall is completed and becomes the new location of St. Joseph College

1939 St. Joseph College is renamed Siena Heights College (after St. Catherine of Siena) by the Adrian Dominican Sisters to distinguish it from St. Joseph Academy

1971 Sister Anthonita Porta founds the Montessori Children's House

1975 Catholic Central High School closes

1993 First Gala held

1992 Second Montessori Children's House opens in Tecumseh (512 N. Union St.)

1996 Saint Joseph Academy celebrates its 100th birthday

1999 St. Joseph Academy's new Middle School building is completed

2000 The first class of eighth graders graduate from the Middle School
